Frequently asked questions
Everything owners ask us most, in the order it usually comes up. This first group is about choosing the right thing for your dog.
How do I know which products my dog needs?
Start with the coat and the routine, not the shelf. Short-coated dogs mostly need bathing, nail care and paw protection. Long or double coats need conditioning and detangling as well, plus a clipper if you're keeping the length down between salon visits. Older dogs and larger breeds are the ones most likely to benefit from joint support.
If you tell us the breed, age and what's bothering you, we'll tell you what to buy and, just as often, what you don't need. Write to support@bjaf.com.
Is Bjaf safe for my dog?
Yes. Everything we make is formulated for dogs specifically, not adapted from human products, and our grooming range is free from parabens, SLS and artificial colour. Our supplements use ingredients with a long record in canine nutrition, at doses meant for daily use.
Human shampoo is the most common mistake we see. A dog's skin is less acidic than yours, so human products strip the coat's natural oils and leave the skin itchy and dry. Ours are pH-matched to dogs.
Can I use Bjaf on a puppy, or on a senior dog?
Our grooming range is gentle enough for puppies from 12 weeks and comfortable for senior dogs with thinner skin.
Supplements are a different matter. Joint support is designed for adult and senior dogs and isn't needed by a growing puppy, whose joints are still forming. Calming support can be given to younger dogs, but check with your vet first if your dog is under 6 months.
My dog is on medication or has a health condition. Can I still use these?
Ask your vet first. That's not us being cautious for the sake of it: supplements can interact with prescribed treatment, particularly anti-inflammatories, sedatives and anything for liver or kidney conditions. The same goes for pregnant or nursing dogs.
Every product page lists the full ingredients, so you can show your vet exactly what's in it. Bjaf products are supplements and grooming products. They're not medicines, and they don't replace veterinary treatment.
How long before I see a difference?
It depends what you're using.
Grooming is immediate. A clean coat, softer fur and cleaner paws are visible the first time you use the product.
Supplements take longer, because they work by building up. Most owners notice something with calming support within 1 to 2 weeks, and with joint support around 4 to 6 weeks, with the fuller effect closer to 8. Dental powder usually shows on breath before it shows on teeth, so give it a month.
Give any supplement a full month before you judge it. If it hasn't done anything by then, tell us and we'll sort it out.
What if my dog hates being groomed?
Most dogs who hate grooming have learned to hate one specific part of it, usually the noise or being restrained. Our clipper runs under 60 dB, which is quiet enough that most nervous dogs stop reacting to it within a session or two.
Go slowly the first few times. Let your dog hear the clipper running while it's nowhere near them, reward that, then work up to short sessions on the body before you go anywhere near paws or face. 10 calm minutes beats a full groom that ends badly.
If it still doesn't work for your dog, send it back. Our return policy is there for exactly this.
I've never groomed a dog before. Is this going to go wrong?
Probably not, if you start with the guide combs. They set the length for you and make it very hard to cut too short. Begin with the longest comb, work down if you want it shorter, and keep to the body until you feel confident. Move the clipper with the direction of the coat rather than against it, and let the weight of the tool do the work instead of pressing.
Nails are the part people worry about, which is why we make a grinder rather than a clipper for them. A grinder takes the nail down a little at a time, so it's much harder to hit the quick. Take off a small amount, look, then take off a little more.
Stop before either of you gets tired. Several short sessions beat a single long one, and anything you take off with a guide comb grows back.
How much do I use, and how often?
Grooming products carry directions on the bottle. As a rule, bathe most dogs every 4 to 6 weeks, or more often if they're outdoor dogs, and use the paw cleaner and detangle spray as often as you like.
Supplements are dosed by weight, and the scoop or chew count is printed on the label. Give them daily, with food, at roughly the same time each day. Consistency matters more than the exact hour.
More is not better. The doses are set where they work, and doubling up won't speed anything along.
What if my dog won't eat the chews?
Some dogs are suspicious of anything new, however good it smells. Break the chew into pieces and mix it into their food for the first few days, or hand it over as a treat rather than putting it in the bowl.
If they still won't take it, we have powders for the same jobs, and those disappear into wet food without a trace. And if neither works, send it back. A supplement your dog refuses is no use to you.
Are your products tested, and are they vet-approved?
Our supplements are made in EU facilities under GMP conditions, and formulated with veterinary input. We don't test on animals beyond the ordinary palatability and tolerance work that any dog product goes through, and we don't run cosmetic testing on animals at all, in line with EU law.
Ordering and delivery
Shipping, payment and tracking. Prices and delivery times always live in the header and at checkout, so they're never out of date here.
Do you ship to my country?
Yes. We have a local Bjaf store for most European markets, and bjaf.com for everywhere else.
You can shop from whichever store you like. They all ship across Europe, so if you land on a local store you can still have your order sent to another country, and if you're on bjaf.com you can have it sent to yours. Pick the store you're most comfortable reading and we'll get it to you either way.
What does delivery cost, and what are my options?
Choose "See shipping options" in the header for the current methods and prices in your country, or check at the last step of checkout. Prices always show in your local currency.
We keep those in one place so they're never out of date here.
How long will it take to arrive?
Most orders leave our warehouse the same day if you order early enough in the working day, and delivery usually takes a few working days from there.
For the delivery times and the daily cut-off that apply to your country, choose "See shipping options" in the header. You'll get a tracking link by email as soon as the parcel is on its way.
How do I track my order?
The tracking link is in your shipping confirmation email. If it hasn't arrived, check your spam folder first, since the confirmation sometimes lands there, and then get in touch through our contact page with your order number and we'll send it again.
Can I change or cancel my order after I've placed it?
Honestly, this one is difficult, and we'd rather be upfront about it than promise something we can't do.
Our warehouse is built for speed. Parcels are picked and packed in waves through the day rather than all at once, some leave at midday, others later, and carriers collect on their own schedules. Once an order has been picked, it's already physically in a stack with hundreds of others and there's no realistic way to find it and pull it out.
So if you need to change or cancel, tell us the moment you know, with your order number, and we'll stop it if it's still possible. Often it won't be. If it's already gone, the simplest fix is to refuse the delivery or just leave it uncollected at the parcel shop. It comes straight back to us and we refund you once it lands.
How can I pay, and is checkout secure?
You'll see every payment method available in your country at checkout, including the usual cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. There's no card fee.
Payment is handled by our payment provider over an encrypted connection, and we never see or store your card details. We only charge your card when the order is dispatched.
After the order
Returns, refunds and warranty. If something here doesn't answer your question, write to us and we'll sort it out.
What if it's not right for my dog?
You have 365 days to return anything unused and unopened, and 30 days to return something you've tried, for any reason at all, including simply that it didn't suit your dog. You don't need to justify it.
Start the return through the portal linked at the bottom of every page, or get in touch through our contact page and we'll set it up for you. Return shipping is at your cost. Keep the original packaging if you can, since a product returned without it is worth less to us and that can reduce the refund.
When do I get my money back?
Within 14 days of us receiving your return, back to the card or account you paid with. In practice it's usually faster. We refund the original delivery charge too, though not any upgrade you paid for faster shipping.
If 14 days pass and nothing has appeared, get in touch with your order number. We'll find it.
What if something breaks?
Every Bjaf tool comes with a 2-year warranty. Send us a photo or a short video of the problem along with your order number, and we'll repair it, replace it or refund you.
Who's behind Bjaf, and how do I reach you?
